What is minimally invasive surgery?

Minimally invasive surgery is an innovative kind of surgery that allows surgery to be performed through small incisions or through natural body openings. The types of minimally invasive surgery include laparoscopy (abdominal), arthroscopy (joint) and thoracoscopy (chest). Minimally invasive surgery is sometimes called “key-hole” surgery meaning that the surgery is performed through “key-hole” sized incisions.
