The majority of surgery cases can be managed by veterinarians in general practice, but occasionally cases may require specialist advice and treatment. A referral can be organised by your regular veterinarian who will forward all relevant details prior to your appointment at Queensland Veterinary Specialists.
At QVS, specialists are available to advise on all aspects of orthopaedic, soft tissue, spinal and oncological surgery. Examples of these include:
Orthopaedic surgery
Joint replacement and arthrodeses (fusion), simple and complex fracture management, arthroscopy, congenital limb deformities and various other joint diseases
Soft-tissue surgery
All aspects of abdominal and thoracic surgery including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, correction of congenital cardiovascular defects, portosystemic shunt management, reconstructive surgery, and hernia repair.
Spinal surgery
Intervertebral disc disease, spinal trauma including fractures, wobbler syndrome and lumbosacral disease

Dr Richard Eaton-Wells Specialist

Dr Richard Eaton-Wells is the principle of Queensland Veterinary Specialists. He graduated in 1971 from the University of Queensland winning both surgery prizes at the time.
In 1975 he practiced at the University of Bristol with Christine Gibbs in the Radiology Dept. During 1979-80 he was a resident in Small Animal Surgery at Ohio State University. Establishing WCVC in 1982 as the first private referral facility in QLD. Richard won the practitioner award from the Journal of Small Animal Practice in 1995. Richard has a special interest in long bone fractures and the return of athletic dogs to performance after surgery. He has published numerous articles and contributed to continuing education. Richard has been a mentor to eight trainees in Small Animal Surgery and ten interns in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. He recently shared the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists award for publication of the year. Richard takes referrals in soft tissue and orthapaedic surgery. Dr Jason Beck Specialist

Jason graduated from Queensland University in 1988 and spent three years in mixed and small animal practice before undertaking a residency in small animal surgery at the University of Sydney. Jason has a Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies degree awarded for investigations into the pathophysiology of canine GDV. He has worked as a faculty surgeon at the University of Sydney and Washington State University in the USA. He is a fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and a registered specialist in small animal surgery. With over fifteen years of experience in managing difficult and complex cases, his interests lie in all aspects of soft tissue, orthopaedic and neurosurgery. Jason has recently relocated his practice from the Brisbane Veterinary Specialist centre to Queensland Veterinary Specialists.
Dr Maurine Thomson Specialist

Dr Maurine Thomson is a 1987 graduate of the University of Queensland. Maurine completed the first surgical internship at QVS in 1994 and then completed a surgical residency at Murdoch University in 1994-95. Maurine returned to the University of Queensland as a registrar in surgery. Maurine completed a surgical oncology fellowship at Colorado State University in 1997-98. Maurine is a registered specialist in surgery and surgical oncology. Maurine is an adjunct associate professor and lectures at the University of Queensland in both oncology and surgery. She has contributed to over 10 articles and book chapters. She re-joined the team at QVS in 2002 and takes referrals in soft tissue surgery and oncology. |
